The Global Problem of Clean Drinking Water

The Global Problem of Clean Drinking Water

Clean drinking water is the kind of water that is safe for drinking by human beings without causing health risks by drinking the water. Clean drinking water is one of the fundamental needs and rights of human beings. Human beings cannot survive without drinking water and clean water is needed by human beings to survive. Clean drinking water is a resource that can be obtained from rivers, streams, lakes and other land water resources that fill up due to precipitation. Drinking water can also be obtained from sources like ground water, hyporheic zones and aquifers. Also sometimes clean drinking water is prepared from plants and by desalination of oceans and seas.
Problem of Clean Drinking Water:
Most developed countries in the world have proper resources and infrastructure in place to provide their citizens with clean drinking water. However there is still a huge problem of clean drinking water in developing and underdeveloped countries. There are few basic problems of clean drinking water in the world today.
•    One is scarcity of drinking water sources in areas with low rainfall like Saharan and sub Saharan countries in Africa and other arid places on the planet. Here water is a scarce commodity and people have to often walk for miles to get two buckets of water for personal use.
•    The other problem is leakages and lack of water supply infrastructure which leads to clean drinking water being wasted while millions suffer from not getting clean drinking water for everyday use.
•    Another problem is that many water sources from where people take water for drinking purposes can be easily contaminated with minerals, chemicals and other contaminating substances which can cause serious health risks for people drinking this water.

Clean drinking water is a need and not a luxury. A lot of effort has been put into developing better clean resources and improving the water quality available to people especially in developing and developed countries all over the world. The situation is vastly improving in the last two decades but still there are hundreds of millions of people without access to clean drinking water all over the world today. This leads to diseases and the standard of living for these poor people who do not have clean drinking water is grave and inadequate. Technological innovations, better resources, more effort in storing clean drinking water and infrastructural development is the key to help people have better access to safe clean drinking water all over the world.
